Students should be protected from sexual harassment and violence. Title IX, of the Education Amendments of 1972, was put in place to provide such protections. The U.S. Department of Education wants to alter Title IX by narrowing the definition of sexual harassment which would allow schools to exclude much of the abuse that students experience along with limiting when schools will respond.Â
If passed as now stated in the proposal, it will be harder for students to come forward with complaints of sexual harassment or assault, thereby losing their ability to obtain support to recover from harassment and/or abuse.
Comments regarding this proposed rule are being accepted through Jan. 28. Visit regulations.gov to voice your opinion. The rule is entitled Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance, under the category EDUCATION. The American Association of University Women is strongly opposed to this proposed rule.
