I am currently a junior at Castilleja High School. Every February, posters and signs are hung around campus to commemorate Black History Month. Once in a while, one of them would catch my eye, and I would remember the greater significance. However, I find it hard to share the same sentiment in the classroom. No matter how much curriculum tries to teach all aspects of our diverse history, I always felt something missing in our education on African-American history. Perhaps, the emptiness comes from the manner in which I have been taught. For me, the most vivid parts of history have always been ones documented in memorabilia.
