A group of nonpartisan volunteers is working to restore tax protections that were ripped away by the passage of California Proposition 19 of 2020. Prop. 19 resulted in an unexpected crushing annual tax burden for hundreds of thousands of ordinary Californians who have just lost their parents and hoping to remain in the family home.
Most voters are not aware that this proposition contained a provision that would impact their own family’s ability to transfer property between the generations without a property tax increase. This is mainly due to the misleading $40 million campaign funded by the California Association of Realtors. For most inheritors, the new property tax law has resulted in immediate escalated and unaffordable property tax bills, forcing many to sell their beloved family home and/or business property.
As we continue our efforts to Fix Prop. 19 and reach our state legislators, it is imperative that California residents educate themselves on this issue and contact their state representatives, insisting they take action to correct the unjust increase in property taxes through inheritance.Â
In addition to working through the California Legislature, we will work toward gathering petition signatures to put a measure on the 2026 ballot.Â
