Per the SMDJ’s Jan. 12 article on money for road upgrades ($200M going for road upgrades), thank you to the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, the city of San Carlos and others for their rapid approval of funding for a project to improve safety for residents who walk and bike over Highway 101 at Holly Street.
After the tragic November 2024 death of Stanford researcher Andrea Vallebueno, who was biking on Holly, staff and our elected officials jumped into action to propose short-, medium- and long-term improvements that will hopefully prevent future tragedies and encourage more people to get around on foot and bike. This included several meetings where the community was able to weigh in on potential solutions to current dangers.
I hope that other cities can follow this example and rapidly implement safety improvements when residents are killed on our streets.
