In her article about the recent decision by the board of the Peninsula Health Care District to abandon its plans for the Peninsula Wellness Community, Holly Rusch mentioned that MidPen Housing had invested $400,000 in developing the affordable component of this project, and this did not even include their staff time. The market rate developers had to have spent many times that. Think also about the mountain of PHCD staff time devoted to this project over more than 10 years, as well as the costly legal counsel that was involved at every step of the way, all of it bankrolled by taxpayer dollars. There was so much waste involved!
Evelyn Stivers was exactly right. Going forward, the district absolutely must partner with another agency that has experience shepherding large developments of this kind. One way or another, we just have to keep more taxpayer money from being thrown down the drain.
