Editor,

Nowadays it’s often a challenge to read the headlines and stay optimistic — to start with, even the ability to rely on objectively reported news is under assault. The tech world’s hijacking of traditional journalists’ ability to support their work continues without meaningful oversight. Approximately 2 1/2 local newspapers close every week in the United States. Never mind that journalism is a vital component for a healthy democracy. But hope we must. And Emma Shen’s recent Student News column, “I am grounded (and grounded)” was a splendid rebuttal of this doom and gloom narrative. She chronicles her journey toward adulthood including learning how to be a reporter and editor. “Stories rarely scream; they whisper” she advises. And that is why, she says, good journalists are good at “noticing” and recognizing “recurring patterns.”
