Yet another road not taken. Suppose Israel had actually taken the directions of the UN and not retained the territories of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, which condemned it to rule over a non Israeli population greater than its own? What would today’s reality be if this would now be a Palestinian state? The Arab states could normalize relations with Israel, as they are currently promising, provided the territories be the UN’s 194th sovereign nation. This state and Israel would be free to trade and develop unhindered, allowing for major benefits for all concerned. Most especially we would have tens of thousands of people alive today and be among us enjoying this new reality rather than just being old photo reminders of the needlessly deceased. Compare that with our sad state of affairs today. The “Land of milk and honey” could easily have been today’s reality.
Some might say, the Arab world would never have allowed that sort of peace with Israel. We see that the borders with Jordan and Egypt have been viable for many years now. Even those between Syria and Lebanon until recently had been quiet since the late eighties. Also note that the 20% of Israel’s population which is Arab, have been good citizens, and the Druze community have even served in the defense forces.
So I don’t see any real obstacle to all this as preventing the better outcome. I’ll leave talk about the “Armageddinists” for a later time, thoughts?
And suppose, Mr. Caggiano, Hamas didn’t massacre over 1000 Israelis and take hostages during their assault. Yet here we are. Let’s deal with reality and not an imaginary situation. Hamas and their supporters made their bed…let the chips fall where they may. More power to Netanyahu to attain his desired result.
