Peace through
annihilation isn't possible
Editor,
In the Feb. 6 edition of the Daily Journal, Frank Scafani cried "No justice, No peace, Free Palestine,” demanding Israel return to its 1967 borders. But Scafani is blind to the fact that prior to 1967, when the Arab nation controlled the West Bank and Gaza, there was no peace. Arafat's PLO and all the Arab countries called for the annihilation of Israel by violence then as well. But Scafani is absolutely correct when he claims Hamas is the democratically-elected government of Palestine. Is it not sad that the Palestinians have elected a regime that also calls for the extermination of Israel and its Jewish citizens? Does Scafani believe that is the path to "peace?”

Martian ready
to leave Earth
Editor,
As a visitor from Mars, I’m amazed how you Earthlings treat this precious home that you say was created for you by a ‘Divine Being.’
Waste, pollution, extinction of species both human and animal. And the inability to live in peace and harmony.
And, how do you select the people that are supposed to protect this wonderful gift?
Children bickering in the playground, about who is the biggest liar, rather than who will govern with consideration and wisdom.
And, if some of your people are able to amass some worldly goods, that you call fortunes, is it used to help those who are not so fortunate? For that matter, why this wide gulf between the haves and have nots?
I’m not sure that Earth is a nice place to visit, let alone live here, so I’m going back to Mars.

Don’t fill the Bay
The San Mateo Daily Journal received this letter addressed to Redwood City Mayor Rosanne Foust:
With due respect, there is no compromise on the further filling in of our Bay. You will find, should we go to an election to decide the issue, that the majority of the community (and that term extends far from RC) will say no more filling in of our Bay.
Please take the price tag off of our Bay. What do you not understand about the further filling of it? We no longer do that. We in Redwood City, we in San Mateo County, we in the entire Bay Area and we in California: We do not fill in more of our Bay. This area is our children’s inheritance, it is a factor in mitigating the effects of global warming and rising waters. It is not available for one of the biggest corporations in the country to use for profit. Even short-term history will show how misguided and greedy some of our city leaders were on the issue. Politics and profit are far smaller than this issue. The Bay is not for sale, not even the part in Redwood City.
Again, what do you not understand about more filling in of the Bay?

Palestine should
only be recognized
after renouncing terrorism
Editor,
Frank Scafani says he is for the formation of a Palestinian state. Well guess what, so are most of us letter-writers and most Israeli citizens. We just don’t want this Palestinian state to be a hotbed of terrorism such as they have given us when Israel left Gaza to them two summers ago. The working hothouses that Israel left in order to help jumpstart the economy of their neighbor were looted, destroyed and turned into gateways for weapon smuggling and Qassam rocket-launching pads by the grateful Palestinians.
The big problem is convincing the Arab world that Jews deserve a homeland of their own in the land of their origin even though it is a 60-year UN sanctioned reality already. When Palestine becomes a state, Arab Muslims will have 23 homelands instead of the current 22. The world’s nations seem to be in agreement that the 23rd nation, to be called Palestine, is pretty much a given once the Palestinians actually renounce terrorism.
It’s the world’s only Jewish nation, only the size of New Jersey, which seems to be the problem. The Jews are digging in to stay because their history of inquisitions, pogroms and a Holocaust have shown them they have nowhere else to go.
