Editor,

We all know that the majority of the Bay Area pollution is from car and truck exhaust ("Spare the air? Spare me” column by Jon Mays in the Dec. 3 edition of the Daily Journal). Do we stop people from driving? The better idea is to give homeowners an incentive to upgrade their old fireplaces to new EPA-approved ones like the "cash for clunkers” program or the solar electric one. We installed a new EPA-approved fireplace a few years back and once it heats up you can hardly see or smell any smoke from the chimney. Also it burns using less wood and we get more heat! How about we start fining the government for all the stupid and wasteful things they do!
