One of journalism’s best kept secrets is that much, maybe even most, of news starts with local reporters and works its way up the news chain, a bit like the food chain.

I was in the news game for 40 years, a career split between the San Francisco bureaus of both United Press International and The Associated Press. Much of that time was spent as a broadcast editor, rewriting newspaper stories that would be slimmed down and sent to radio and television stations.

Standards started slipping decades ago when UPI hit the money iceberg and gave AP a virtual monopoly on news gathering and distribution.

Mr. Clifford, thanks for the trip down memory lane for the news game in our local area. I’d like to know what you think of the current news game and how it can survive, or if it will. And your thoughts on the loss of credibility from the mainstream media and whether they’ll ever be able to regain any credibility. As it is now, I highly doubt it. It appears Trump Derangement Syndrome has ruined the mainstream media’s credibility, permanently. Of course, that’s not as bad as the government losing credibility even more these past few years, which is worse. But that’s a topic for another day.
