Surrounded by close family and friends, Johnny Cheung took his last breath on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at the age of 72. Born in Swatow, China on October 7, 1946, he was raised in Hong Kong, where he met the love of his life, Katherine Baptista. Together, they started a family with their two children, Christopher and Lucille, and came to America to provide their family with a better future.
One word to describe Johnny is “fighter.” He was never a quitter, and this was exemplified in everything that he did in his life. He fought to provide for himself in Hong Kong as a young man; he worked tirelessly in order to care for his family, and consequently, built a fruitful life in America; and he persevered for thirteen years against lung cancer. Throughout his life, his persistence, humility, and thoughtfulness touched many people. He was a faithful husband and father, an avid Giants fan, a quiet and beloved presence at family gatherings, and someone who considered and loved you deeply, regardless of who you were. We will always remember his generous invitations to dim sum, his willingness to help out his family, and, ultimately, the simple fondness he had for each person placed in his life.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Cheung Hok Wai. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Katherine; his two children and their spouses, Christopher and Karen along with Lucille and Kyla; his five grandchildren, Alyssa, Alex, Angel, Christian and Samantha; his mother, Lee Chor Yuk, and his two younger siblings, Alice and Raymond. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations in honor of Johnny to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
