SACRAMENTO — State employees would get paid if the Legislature fails to enact a budget on time, under a bill passed by the California Assembly.
The bill, AB1699, passed on a 54-17 vote Thursday and now moves to the state Senate.
Supporters say state workers should not be penalized when there are legislative disputes over the budget.
Some argue that lawmakers are the ones that should not be paid if the budget is late.
Democratic Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, who introduced the bill, says he will consider making the change as the bill moves through the Senate.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he would not sign the bill because it would significantly impact the state’s cash flow flexibility during a fiscal crisis.
