SAN FRANCISCO — The chief sponsor of San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers race has pulled its support.
A spokesman for insurance giant ING said in a statement that the company had reached its goal with the race. Spokesman Joseph Loparco added that ING wishes the event "many more years of success.”
The race has been dogged by complaints for years from many residents whose homes line the 12K route from San Francisco Bay to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean.
The run has become famous for contestants in wacky costumes, or no costume at all, and racers who become drunk and urinate on residents’ lawns.
Next year’s event will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the race.
