A former youth pastor was arrested at a family member's home in San Mateo last week on federal child pornography charges for allegedly using a church computer to arrange a sexual encounter with an officer posing as a boy.
James Cannel, 45, of Washington, was arrested by FBI agents July 19 at a residence in San Mateo's Fiesta Gardens neighborhood.
"He tried to run out a back door, but agents quickly nabbed him," said Raymond Lauer, spokesman for the FBI Seattle Field Office.
He was arrested and booked on one count of receiving and distributing child pornography and one count of receiving and distributing obscene material.
Cannel fled Yakima, Wash. after being indicted by a federal grand jury May 17, according to an FBI statement released in May.
Cannel worked for about four months at Selah Covenant Church but resigned after he was arrested Feb. 25 by police from Seattle on suspicion of possessing and distributing images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Officers said he used a church computer to try to arrange sex with a detective posing as a 12-year-old boy, according to a March 2 article in the Yakima Herald-Republic.
Cannel was released from jail, which led to the federal indictment.
"He remains in custody here awaiting extradition to Washington," Lauer said.
