Teachers in the San Mateo Union High School District voted to approve a new school calendar Thursday to schedule exams before winter break and start the school year Aug. 16.
District trustees will vote and likely approve the teacher's vote at the Feb. 10 meeting.
Craig Childress, president of the district's teachers association, said Thursday the vote passed 252 to 185 for the new schedule.
There are about 470 teachers in the union, he said.
School is scheduled to begin Aug. 16, start winter break Dec. 22 and begin the second semester Jan. 10.

The school year is expected to finish June 1.
Childress said the teacher's association had surveyed the teachers when calendars were negotiated with the district, as it typically does, and said the district was not pushing the earlier start date to align the schedule with state test dates, as some have said.
The teacher's union had proposed a traditional schedule but district representatives were not interested, Childress said.
