A former Bay Area tennis coach sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for molesting four young San Mateo County boys who were his students at area tennis clubs was denied parole on May 1, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
This was Theodore Wargo’s second time being denied parole by a parole board, and he will not be able to have a parole hearing for another five years, Wagstaffe said.
“This was a horrific abuse of multiple children by a trusted tennis coach. He needs to serve a lot longer, from our perspective,” Wagstaffe said.
Wargo pleaded no contest in January to five felony counts of child molestation, just before his jury trial in San Mateo County Superior Court was scheduled to begin. He was initially charged with 30 counts for a series of incidents that allegedly dated back to 1991.
Prosecutor Sean Gallagher said the boys were all under the age of 14 when the abuse began, and one was as young as 9.
Wargo was arrested by Millbrae police at his home in Fresno, where he had recently moved. He lived in the cities of South San Francisco and Hillsborough, according to police, and worked as a coach in San Francisco, Millbrae and Burlingame.
