A teenager with a gun led police on a chase through Carlmont High School yesterday morning and caused an hour-long campus lockdown.
At about 10:55 a.m., a Belmont police officer saw the boy peering into the window of a car parked in the 1900 block of Chula Vista Avenue near Carlmont. The boy stopped for questioning, but then made a quick escape and ran west toward Carlmont.
The boy tossed a hand gun into some bushes while being chased by the officer on school campus. During the chase and subsequent search, the school was placed on lockdown and teachers kept students inside with doors closed.
Officers from the San Carlos Police Department and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office helped with the search. Students were released at 12:10 p.m. when officers determined that the boy got away.
"We have the gun and we're still trying to determine the status of the vehicle," said Belmont police Sgt. Pat Halleran.
Police impounded the vehicle and are trying to figure out if it was stolen or if it belongs to a student or neighbor, Halleran said.
Police are also trying to determine if the boy who ran yesterday may be responsible for a string of car burglaries in the area, Halleran said.
The suspect is described as a Polynesian male, about 17 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a black hat and black jeans.
Anyone with information about this case should call the Belmont Police Department at 595-7400.
