Ethics standards should be condensed and reviewed by county lawmakers, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.
To make sure the county board is practicing proper ethics, Supervisor Jerry Hill said he wanted county staff to look at ethics codes and best practices and produce a portfolio for the board's review.
High standards
"It's long overdue," said Supervisor Mark Church. "It's important that we have policies in place to operate at the highest ethical standards."
The board is briefed on conflicts of interest, but Supervisor Adrienne Tissier said future boards should have a class on ethics. The report is expected in the fall, which will likely be followed by the formation of an ethics task force and public meetings on the issue.

Errors in diagnosis and treatment of patients that result in serious injury and death will be required to appear in semi-annual reports, and the law will protect employees when they report errors.
"We don't want medical errors swept under the carpet, we want them out in the forefront," Church said.
The change sparked from the Aug. 12, 2004 death of Armando Castellanos. The 41-year-old was allegedly given 10 times the required dosage of a chemotherapy drug at San Mateo Medical Center.
