Sheriff Christina Corpus has denied all claims made by an investigative report conducted by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell over complaints raised against the Sheriff’s Office’s executive team.
As county officials figure out how they can proceed with possibly removing Sheriff Christina Corpus from her elected position, the embattled sheriff is not letting up on her efforts to delay or discredit the process, most recently by filing a lawsuit against the county over record disclosures.
Corpus’ lawyers have filed a claim against San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, County Executive Mike Callagy and Assistant Clerk Sukhmani Purewal over a public records request for contract information between the county and the retired judge who investigated Corpus’ administration.
The county has refused to disclose certain requested records signing attorney-client privilege, the lawsuit filed April 11 claims. Corpus requested the contract with the lawyer, her invoices, time sheets and records of payment. Corpus also sought an unredacted version of evidence from Cordell’s investigation, which was also denied by the county, the claim reads.
The investigation’s findings have carried significant weight in a public dismantling of the Sheriff’s Office, including Corpus firing whistleblowers, personnel resigning from their positions, and a number of crossfire lawsuits filed.
A case management conference for the suit is set for June 23.
The board was previously anticipated to vote on finalized removal proceedings at its upcoming meeting April 22, but the item is not agendized, and seems to be prolonged to a future date.
When asked if there are any concerns about elongating the process, which has been estimated by consultants to take 3 ½ months or longer, board President David Canepa said the county is focused on assuring due diligence.
“We all want to do it right, it’s the first time it’s ever been done, so that weighs heavy,” Canepa said.
At the board’s meeting April 8, supervisors sought updates to the proposed removal process to ensure due process for the sheriff and complete objectivity in the matter.
The draft proceedings include three separate supermajority votes by the board and what could be a 10-day trial hearing in front of an objective third-party hearing officer. Corpus ultimately has the option to make the hearing closed to the public.
