San Bruno’s Chamber of Commerce is hosting a downtown unity day event Sept. 27, celebrating the city’s diverse community and merchants with an array of cultural performances, vendors and a raffle.
The event will begin from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Bruno Sanatan Mandir, with local artists, vendors and youth entrepreneurs from Parkside Intermediate School making up a cultural marketplace.
Attendees will also be given downtown passports, and after visiting and getting stamps from 10 participating local businesses, will be able to use those passports to enter into a raffle.
One goal of the event is for residents to get to know local merchants, Rebecca Molano, San Bruno’s Chamber of Commerce president and owner of One Love Cafe, said.
“You often hear, ‘I didn’t know this was here,’” she said. “The goal is to bring foot traffic to our little downtown … to just highlight the different offerings and show what makes San Bruno special.”
From 1-5 p.m., a cultural celebration will be held at Centennial Plaza, featuring performances from Ata Mai Cultural Dance, De Colores Belle Air Dance Group, and Los Mendoza & Friends. The 2025 San Mateo County Poet Laureate Antonio Lopez will also speak.
San Bruno’s Chamber of Commerce, which Molano formed out of the San Bruno Merchants Association, was created with community advocacy and celebration of the city’s diversity in mind, Molano said. That’s also the overarching principle of the event, one of the first major ventures by the group since its inception.
“The chamber is not just for business owners, it’s for anybody who wants to see a better San Bruno,” she said. “It’s beyond a business group, it’s a community group. We feel like the health of our businesses is dependent on the health of our community.”
It’s not to be confused with the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce — no apostrophe — which recently announced a revitalization effort after a three-year hiatus, with leadership claiming it was the only legitimate chamber.
San Bruno’s downtown is also served by the San Bruno Improvement Group, which focuses on beautification and family-centric events.
