A Redwood City native with Irish roots was the Citizen of the Year in Dublin — Dublin, California, that is.
Joe Washington II, 51, who was an Eagle Scout in Troop 149 in Redwood City, was honored during the St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Alameda County city. Accompanied by his wife, Mary, he was in a car driven in the parade by his son, Joe Washington III.
Washington was honored for his work with the Dublin Boy Scouts, the high school band and local soccer teams. He graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel grade school in Redwood City, Bellermine Prep and Loyola Marymount University.
His Irish ties go deep. His late mother Millie, whose maiden name was McGriskin, donated a cherished family artifact to the San Mateo County History Museum. Part of the immigrants exhibit at the museum on Courthouse Square, the item, which is displayed in a glass case, is a cattle bone with carvings that depict, among other things, a harp and Irish wolfhounds. The work was done by a relative — a member of the Irish Republican Army — while he was imprisoned by the British.
Washington’s father, Joseph Sr., still lives in the Redwood City home where he and his wife raised a daughter and three sons.
