The California Highway Patrol reports that 648 crashes occurred on CHP-patrolled Bay Area highways yesterday compared to 174 crashes last Tuesday.
The heavy rainfall in the Bay Area bogged down commutes, flooded freeways and reduced visibility. However, CHP spokesman Officer Mike Wright said that although the bad weather is a factor in crashes, it is not the cause.
"Weather didn't cause the crashes," said Wright. "The causes were speed, tailgating and speed."
Wright said he often compares daily crash numbers whenever the Bay Area experiences rain. Although heavily commuted areas, like those surrounding Interstates 580 and 880 tend to see more accidents, the 648 crashes from yesterday were located throughout the Bay Area, said Wright.
