An overloaded extension cord triggered an apartment complex structure fire in Pacifica on Monday night, fire officials said.
At 8:19 p.m., crews were alerted to a residential structure fire at 2040 Francisco Blvd. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from a second floor unit of a three-story apartment building, according to the North County Fire Authority.
After they knocked down the fire, crews remained on scene for over four hours. There were no injuries reported. All occupants had safely evacuated before the crews arrived, according to fire officials.
"The cause of the incident was determined to be the result of a failed portable extension cord due to overloading, which ignited combustibles such as clothing and magazines," the Fire Authority said.
Fire officials advised the public not to overload extension cords, or substitute extension cords for permanent wiring.
"If an extension cord is covered, heat cannot escape, which may result in a fire. And always remember the importance of installing and maintaining smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms increase your chances of surviving a home fire by 50%," the agency said.
