Serra High School in San Mateo has named Charlie McGrath to be its new principal to join President Barry Thornton, Ed.D. who was appointed in March, officials announced Thursday.
McGrath will assume office in July.
McGrath was the assistant superintendent of the Catholic Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, before accepting the position at Serra. “I’m excited to join the Serra community to continue its tradition of excellence and to work with the boys throughout their high school experience,” said McGrath, who has relatives in the Bay Area. “I look forward to being part of the great things happening at Serra, as it continues to meet the needs of families who want their boys to be educated in an exemplary school environment.”
McGrath has a master’s degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in religious studies and philosophy. He began his career as a campus minister and theology teacher at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas. He later moved into administration as an assistant principal and principal at John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham, Alabama.
“Charlie brings exceptional leadership skills to Serra,” said Thornton, who will transition to the role of president in July. “His tenure at John Carroll High School was marked by innovative academic programs, cutting-edge technology changes and student success in accessing a wide range of college choices.” Thornton has his sights set on continuing to enhance Serra’s campus facilities. He was a key member of the planning committee in the design and implementation of Serra’s $21 million Center for the Arts and Sciences, according to the school.
Thornton replaced Lars Lund, who first came to Serra in 1983 and spent the last nine years as president.
