A man who was convicted of beating and attempting to sexually assault a woman in a downtown Redwood City motel room in 2010 was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years to life in prison.
Wearing red jail clothes and handcuffs, 47-year-old Maurice Banks was hugged by his defense attorney, Jeffrey Hayden, after the sentence was handed down in San Mateo County Superior Court Tuesday morning.
Banks was also ordered to pay $13,893 in restitution to the California Victim Compensation Program.
In August, a jury found Banks guilty of five counts stemming from the December 2010 attack at the Garden Motel on Broadway. The charges were intent to commit rape in the process of a burglary; residential burglary; felony assault; attempting to force oral copulation; and felony indecent exposure.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said he was pleased Banks was given the maximum prison term.
“This is a good sentence,” Wagstaffe said.

Prosecutors said that early the morning of Dec. 4, 2010, Banks broke into a motel room adjacent to his that had been rented by a woman who was looking for a quiet place to study for final exams.
When she tried to run out of the room, Banks punched her several times in the face, knocking her unconscious and fracturing her orbital bone, prosecutors said.
When she regained consciousness, her pants were around her knees and Banks was standing over her demanding oral sex, prosecutors said.
The woman managed to sprint from the room and report the crime. Banks was arrested several hours later.
A jury of 10 women and two men found Banks guilty on Aug. 7 after a six-day trial and a brief deliberation.
