Support for congressional candidate Sam Liccardo just got a big boost, as Jackie Speier, former U.S. representative and current Board of Supervisors candidate, as well as former state Sen. Jerry Hill and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller are endorsing him for the District 16 seat.
Though more than four months remain until the November election, it’s already proven to be a lively race. Candidates Evan Low and Joe Simitian’s tie and subsequent recount took roughly two months to resolve, with Low and Liccardo ultimately facing off in the upcoming election.
The district is home to some of Silicon Valley’s most successful technology firms. But Hill said Liccardo, former San Jose mayor, has proven to be a strong leader, one who can make tough decisions in Congress.
“This moment demands a person who will bring people together to focus on solutions. Sam is unique in this campaign, because he is the only candidate who can do this,” Hill said in an emailed statement. “It is my honor to enthusiastically endorse Sam Liccardo’s campaign for Congress. He is the leader this community deserves.”
During a Pacifica press conference on Wednesday, June 26, Speier added that Liccardo's years of experiencing leading the Bay Area's most populous city is a testament to his leadership capabilities.

A vacancy opened in the highly sought-after congressional seat after U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, announced her retirement at the end of last year after serving over three decades in the role. Pacifica Mayor Sue Vaterlaus is also endorsing Liccardo.
