A 22-year-old San Leandro man was sentenced to one year in county jail and three years probation Tuesday after he pleaded no contest in July to felony robbery and battery of a police officer for a violent attack and robbery at the 7-Eleven at the eastern edge of downtown San Mateo last summer, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Jeffrey Finigan allegedly said it was a close call between prison and probation in the case of Melton Nau Jr., who received 180 days credit for time served and is required to complete a substance abuse program. Nau’s defense attorney allegedly said his client is truly remorseful and takes full responsibility for his actions, and prosecutors asked for him to be sent to prison for five years, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
