New structures and crews clustered on the north block of the Hillsdale Shopping Center in recent weeks signal progress on new shops and amenities planned for the retail destination’s north block.
It’s been just over two years since plans to replace an aging Sears building and an underutilized surface parking lot with a bowling alley, luxury cinema, restaurants and boutique shops were approved on a 12-acre site north of 31st Avenue and fronting El Camino Real.
The construction includes Cineopolis Cinema, bowling alley, new food court, boutique shops and more.

Aimed at creating a walkable environment centered around a large landscaped plaza, the project was touted by representatives of the developer Bohannon Development Company as a fresh approach to retail by shifting away from big box retail and toward offering in-person experiences that can’t be found on the internet
Though redevelopment on the north block of the shopping center is expected to be complete by the spring of 2019, visitors will be able to experience the new environment as early as this fall, when a new dining terrace is expected to open to the public, said Marissa Currie, a representative of the project.
By providing space to a mix of local and national vendors and offering indoor and outdoor lounge areas, the dining terrace is expected to be a community gathering space and an anchor destination on the Peninsula, said Currie.
“We know the public is excited about having expanded culinary options in the area,” she said in an email. “We also know that locals are looking forward to having more great options for dining, shopping and entertainment in the heart of the community.”
Currie said crews have broken ground on all of the buildings planned for the redevelopment, which includes a Cineopolis Cinema, a bowling alley lounge named Pinstripes and an underground fitness center, adding that internal improvements have not yet started but will be done as tenants are finalized and move in.
