·The Belmont City Council agreed to allow pygmy goats in the city at its meeting Tuesday night after a resident made a request. Staff will create new wording for the relevant animal ordinance and the council will vote on it at a future meeting.
·Hossein Golestan, financial services manager for the city of San Mateo, will replace Finance Director John de Russy who is retiring next month after a 35-year career in public service, City Manager Arne Croce announced yesterday.
Golestan has more than 25 years experience in financial management with private and public institutions in England, Iran and the United States. He's been with San Mateo for 19 years, Croce said in a statement released yesterday.

·Senate bill 619, authored by state Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, passed the Senate this week with a 39-0 vote. SB619 authorizes the use of global positioning systems to track parolees and probationers - including sexual predators - throughout California.
·Senate bill 616, authored by state Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, passed the Senate with a 37-0 vote Monday. SB616 requires the California Department of Corrections to: Use the least expensive drugs possible, work with the Veterans Administration's Hepatitis C program to receive funding and cut down on expensive long-distance transportation.
Education
The San Mateo Union High School District meeting will hold a meeting Thursday, May 26 to discuss items including an application for Gifted and Talented Education Funding and to honor Millbrae police Officer James Pappas. Pappas is retiring after 25 years of service to the city.
The board will also review Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's May budget revision and its impact on the district and award a bid for the restoration of areas of San Mateo High School where portables are now. The meeting will take place 7 p.m. at the SMART Center, 789 E. Poplar Ave. in San Mateo.
