Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his appearance at the annual state Republican convention in Burlingame Friday to tell a crowd of more than 600 that he was unhappy with San Francisco's move to make gay marriages legal and had directed the attorney general to take action.
Before Schwarzenegger could begin his 20-minute speech about the importance of passing propositions 57 and 58, he directly denounced San Francisco's decision to sue the state over gay marriages. Schwarzenegger said he sent a letter to state Attorney General Bill Lockyer to handle the situation "as quickly as possible."
"While we wait for the state to act, San Francisco needs to start obeying the law," Schwarzenegger said at the annual Burlingame convention.
Schwarzenegger's statement comes after 3,277 same sex couples were issues marriage licenses by the city despite the state law against it. The city of San Francisco filed a lawsuit against the state Wednesday in which it contends the law defies the state's constitution clause outlawing discrimination against people on the basis of sexual orientation or gender.
Schwarzenegger's comments received with loud applause before he used the remainder of his speech to promote propositions 57 and 58.

Prop. 57 would allow the state to borrow $15 billion in bonds. Twelve billion dollars would buy bonds while $3 billion would offset next year's budget deficit. Prop. 58 would create a constitutional amendment banning the Legislature from future borrowing.
"I know it's not an easy choice we are given," Schwarzenegger said. "We can consolidate and refinance. Then we cut up the credit cards and throw them away."
Opponents argue the bonds would place a large burden on future generations and lower the state's credit rating.
Schwarzenegger also reaffirmed his opposition to raising taxes. Instead, he encouraged the growth of business to create new jobs and fuel the economy.
