Lera Glass is being sued for negligence in a four-alarm fire that burned down its building in May of this year.
The suit was filed in San Mateo County Superior Court by Marcia Stuermer, whose business Fossil Faux had machinery in the Lera Glass building at 1192 Montgomery Ave., San Bruno.
The fire was most likely started when a spark from an electrical saw ignited nearby flammable vapors, said San Bruno Fire Chief Dan Boyer. Enough evidence had been destroyed in the fire it was difficult to be certain of the source of the spark, he added.
John Rook, owner and operator of Lera Glass, sustained "severe" burns and smoke inhalation, according to the incident report filed by the San Bruno Fire Department. Another Lera Glass employee, Omar Melendez, was listed as suffering "moderate" smoke inhalation.
Rook and Lera Glass employee Jorge Cabena Lara removed equipment from the building after calling 911, according to the San Bruno Fire Department report. It is not known whether any of Fossil Faux's equipment was removed.
Stuermer is confident that Lera Glass was at fault in the blaze, said Todd Schneider, Stuermer's attorney. Stuermer is suing for lost property, lost productivity and damage to her reputation.
A call to Lera Glass was not returned.
Fossil Faux creates custom-ordered countertops. Lera Glass employees stored Stuermer's machines on the premises and ran them according to her specifications.
