A former Redwood City police officer was sentenced to 18 months of court probation and two days in county jail after he pleaded no contest to resisting and obstructing a police officer Friday for prompting an hourslong standoff outside his Redwood City home in August, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
James McGee, 56, was arrested on suspicion of a domestic violence assault Aug. 9 nearly 12 hours after the standoff began in the early morning, according to prosecutors previously.
Officers responded at about 2 a.m. to a report from a woman saying McGee kicked her in the face during an argument at a home on the 700 block of Windsor Way, according to police previously.
Police responding to the residence were told by the woman that her injuries were the result of an accident and that she tripped and fell. After she gave several inconsistent statements, the woman declined to cooperate and both she and McGee were intoxicated, according to prosecutors.
Officers contacted McGee by phone but he refused to leave the home and started what would become an 11-hour standoff with police. Officers issued a shelter in place order for other residents in the area and recommended a voluntary evacuation order for some, according to prosecutors and police previously.
Authorities surrounded the home and continued to try to negotiate with him but he refused to communicate with officers, police said previously.
Because the woman gave inconsistent statements both that night and the next day when she was questioned and did not want domestic violence charges to move forward, prosecutors did not feel the domestic violence charge could be proven.
McGee previously worked as a detective, motor officer and member of the SWAT team in his 29-year tenure with the Redwood City Police Department. He has been out of custody on a $50,000 bail bond, according to prosecutors.
McGee’s defense attorney Josh Bentley could not be immediately reached for comment.
