City Council voted unanimously last night to extend the office space moratoriums in both the downtown area and on 25th Ave. in San Mateo.
The ordinances will be extended an additional 180 days. Senior Planner, Ronald Munekawa said this amount of time will provide a good checkpoint to determine what the city will do about office space in these areas.
Councilmember Sue Lempert suggested the council include a portion of Second Ave. under the moratorium which was left out of the original plan after Toni Montgomery spoke of her dry-cleaning business located on Second Ave.
"We have been left out and we are at the mercy of people who could care less about San Mateo," Montgomery said. "We need retail in San Mateo, I want to see us grow but do we have to loose what makes us unique and strong?"
A San Jose group purchased the lease for the building which house her store about one month ago.
