Notre Dame de Namur University drama students found the Christmas spirit this week by collecting more than two tons of canned food and 1,700 toys for local charities. The donations went to Second Harvest Food Bank, Samaritan House, Toys for Tots and five others. The students also put on eight performances of "The Music of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol" free of charge. Audience members were encouraged to bring toys and non-perishable food to the shows for donation. More than 65,000 in the last 50 years have seen the longest-running musical production of "A Christmas Carol" in the Bay Area at Notre Dame, and now it is asking for help restoring its theater. It is asking for individual and corporate sponsors to restore single seats for $100, side rows for $700, and center rows for $1,400. More than $34,000 has been donated so far. For more information on the Save our Seat Campaign call Marianne Chung at (650) 508-3546.

Parents in the San Carlos Elementary School District have passed a mid-year goal of collecting $200,000 to fund music and library programs. The San Carlos Education Foundation said it expected parents to donate $250,000 by the end of 2004 and reach a goal of $500,000 by the end of the school year. The foundation is far ahead of what it collected by December of last year, Heather Elementary foundation representative Tobey Bergen said. The money goes toward vocal and instrumental music programs and salaries for library specialists and Middle School vice-principals and counselors. The foundation hopes to spend money on physical education, computer labs, reading literacy and art programs. It is asking for tax-deductible donations from parents of $365, or a dollar a day. A teacher and the principal of Notre Dame High School in Belmont have received grants for the 2005 school year. Principal Rita Gleason received a $30,000 grant for the Student Scholarship Program from the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation. "We would like to commend Notre Dame High School on its efforts in contributing invaluably toward sustaining the highest standards of our society," said Jack Fitzpatrick, the foundation's executive director, in a statement. Biology teacher Nicole Salgado also received a $2,750 grant for tools, plants and seeds for the newly-developed Environmental Science in Action Program. Salgado is leading an effort to restore the native riparian ecosystem on the school's campus by removing invasive exotic plants and cultivating native plant species.

The Burlingame School District and Burlingame Rotary Club are giving textbooks to South African students. Community Gatepath, a nonprofit for people with disabilities, collected the books from district schools and prepared boxes for shipment. The books will be given to South African schools where students often share textbooks. "When we upgraded our English-language textbooks, we wanted to find an English-speaking country where students could really benefit from receiving used books," said District Superintendent and Rotary Club Board member Sonny Da Marto, in a statement. Burlingame Rotary Club President Sheryl Young Hunt said the project fit Rotary perfectly. "Rotary's purpose is to connect local philanthropic efforts with needs anywhere they exist around the world," she said.
