Burlingame has chosen a new police chief, Raj Vaswani, to lead the department after former Police Chief Michael Matteucci retired last December, a press release from the city said July 31.
Vaswani served with the San Francisco Police Department for more than 31 years, the press release said, working within the Special Operations Bureau and as commander of Investigations. He also served as citywide night captain and as a commanding officer for two stations during various points in his tenure.
He has a variety of involvement within different fields of police work, including within the administration bureau, focusing on permitting and facilities, and overseeing the legal division in the Chief of Staff’s office.
“With his wealth of experience in law enforcement, Raj was my top pick and was the unanimous choice of the City’s Department Head team. I’m confident his expertise and commitment will make him a tremendous asset to the organization and the Burlingame community,” City Manager Lisa Goldman said in the press release.
Vaswani’s official service with the Burlingame Police Department will begin Aug. 4. He will introduce himself at the City Council meeting Aug. 18.
“I am honored to serve as Burlingame’s next police chief and look forward to working alongside the dedicated members of the Burlingame Police Department to keep our community safe,” he said in the press release.
