Sophomore leadoff hitter Ale Phillips powered College of San Mateo softball (7-0 Coast, 28-0 overall) to its 28th straight win to start the year.

Phillips connected for a solo home run in the second, then delivered a three-run blast in the fifth to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-0 mercy-rule win over Cabrillo College (4-3, 22-7). Freshman Selena Gonzales added a two-run homer in the third, as CSM improved its state-leading home run total to 55. Antelope Valley ranks second in the state with 40 home runs.
Sophomore Love Cabanas got CSM on the board in the first with an RBI single. Gonzales made it 2-0 later in the inning with an RBI single.
Freshman left-hander Lola Sierra earned the shortened five-inning complete-game shutout, allowing three hits while striking out five. All three Cabrillo hits came in the second, back-to-back-to-back to open the frame by loading the bases. Sierra bounced back by inducing a grounder to sophomore second baseman Maliah Castro, who fired home for the first out of the inning. CSM’s ace then coaxed an infield popup before finishing the inning with a punch-out to strand the bases loaded.
Sierra went on to retire the last 12 batters she faced. With the win, her record improves to 15-0. It marks the second win of the week for the freshman, after CSM rolled to a 14-2 victory Tuesday at Monterey Peninsula College.
