Kyle Harrison, 23, was not driving the car that hit the couple around two years ago.
Cesar Morales, who was 17 at the time of the crash, was found responsible for two counts of vehicular manslaughter after he T-boned the car carrying Greg Ammen, 44, and Grace Spiridon, 42 while racing Harrison. Morales was going between 92 to 117 mph at the time of the crash, per a California Highway Patrol analysis, and potentially even faster per expert review.
The DA’s Office unsuccessfully argued that Morales be charged with second-degree murder.
But because Morales, who is now 19, was a juvenile at the time of the crime, he was convicted in juvenile court and, after the verdict, the DA’s Office had asked for the maximum sentence possible, which would have been a year in custody. Because he was tried as a juvenile, he could only have been held until his 21st birthday. He also had credit for time served.

He was sentenced to 90 days of electronic home monitoring. He was released into the custody of his parents in January.
Wagstaffe said that the decision to charge Harrison with manslaughter, rather than murder, was made because of the sentencing disparity.
“Out of a sense of justice, we bargained it,” he said.
Ammen and Spiridon’s 9-year-old twin daughters, who were 7 at the time of the crash, were also in the car but miraculously survived.
