Editor,
Punishment for the horrific and tragic deaths of Greg Ammen, 44, and Grace Spiridon, 42, that was caused by two street racers in Redwood City, has now been decided by the courts.
Cesar Morales, who was just two months shy of his 18th birthday when he T-boned the car that killed Ammen and Spiridon, was tried in juvenile court. Kyle Harrison was 21 years old when he participated in the race with Morales, and was tried in adult court. Morales was found responsible for two counts of vehicular manslaughter, and was sentenced to a mere 90-days of electronic home monitoring, and was released into the custody of his parents last month. Harrison pleaded no contest to two counts of vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to eight years in state prison. The inequity of these two sentences staggers me.
One kid, because he was still technically a juvenile, is let off with merely a slap on the hand, after being found to be the actual driver that caused the deaths of the San Carlos couple. Harrison who raced Morales, but was not driving the car that hit and killed the couple, will be spending the next eight years in prison. No real consequences were given to Morales, as he is about to walk free and live his life. Harrison will be behind bars until 2033. Justice was not served here.

Thats California for you - if you are a white man - you get a different style of "justice" - for some reason if your skin is a darker complexion you get a pass for your horrible behavior - because we all know its not your fault because of "equity". SMH.. This loser Cesar Morales actually killed 2 people - he was the one who crashed his car into the parents of those young children - and he all he gets is house arrest. 8 years vs Nothing. There has been 14 year olds charged as adults - Cesar Morales was around 6 months from turning 18 and for some reason - they didn't choose to charge him as an adult.....for killing 2 people. This is why normal people don't step in and stop bad behavior anymore - like Daniel Penny - if a criminal isn't white - you will get crucified for putting him in his place. This misplaced sympathy is disgusting.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. McCormick. I’m sure many agree with your conclusion that justice wasn’t served. The bigger question is why the government didn’t see fit to charge Mr. Morales as an adult. This action is not a novel idea as many youths have been charged and convicted as adults, with appropriate penalties. Perhaps there’s a valid reason, or perhaps, as you’ve concluded, justice wasn’t served and this result fell through the cracks. Regardless, let’s hope Mr. Morales learned his lesson and becomes a law-abiding citizen for the remainder of his life.
