Four teenagers were killed in a solo-vehicle collision in unincorporated Marin County on Friday evening and two others were in critical condition as of Saturday.
All six occupants were confirmed to be students at Archie Williams High School by the superintendent of the Tamalpais Union High School District, Tara Taupier, who said grief counselors would be available at all district schools in the coming week.
"This is an incredibly heart wrenching time for our entire school and broader community," Taupier wrote in a letter to the district community. "As we await more information, we know the Tam District community will pull together in compassion, care, and support for one another. Thank you for keeping the students and their families in your thoughts," she wrote.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the wreck at about 7:30 p.m. Friday on San Geronimo Valley Road, south of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The Marin County Sheriff's Office and Marin County Fire Department also responded to the scene, according to a statement from the CHP.
The CHP said the Volkswagen SUV had apparently veered off the roadway and struck a tree on the shoulder.
All of the vehicles' occupants were between 14 and 16 years old. Three were pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth victim died after being taken to a hospital.

Two others, including the driver, suffered major injuries and were in critical condition as of Saturday, according to the CHP and the superintendent's statement.
The CHP released a statement of its own expressing sorrow to the community.
"On behalf of the California Highway Patrol, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and classmates of the four young students whose lives were tragically lost in this heartbreaking crash," said CHP Marin Area Commander Capt. Amy Newton.
The cause remained under investigation as of Saturday afternoon. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Marin area CHP office at (415) 924-1100.
In the meantime, Superintendent Taupier urged students and others in the school district not to share unsubstantiated information and said updates would be provided as more information is released.
Archie Williams High School is in the unincorporated town of San Anselmo and had 1,143 students enrolled as of fall 2024.
