Authorities have started arresting protesters blocking the Golden Gate Bridge on Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
U.S. Highway 101 leading to the bridge is closed in both directions due to the demonstration over Israel's actions in Gaza and heavy traffic is clogging the areas on both sides of the bridge.
The CHP said in a social media post at 10:30 a.m. that they were starting to arrest protesters on the bridge. Authorities did not say when the bridge will reopen and motorists are advised to avoid Highway 101 and use alternate routes.
In Oakland, both directions of Interstate Highway 880 near downtown remain blocked as of 10:50 a.m.
In the southbound direction of I-880, hundreds of protesters were blocking the freeway near Seventh Street. In the northbound direction, seven protesters were chained to concrete-filled barrels on the freeway near the Fifth Avenue off-ramp.
The CHP has arrested one protester on the freeway at the Seventh Street location and more arrests will be made if the crowd doesn't disperse, authorities said.
Traffic was backed up for miles and the CHP said that there is was no estimated time for reopening the freeway.
The actions are planned as part of an "economic blockade" coordinated with similar protests around the world. Protesters are hoping to target "the global economy for its complicity in Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people," organizers under the banner A15Action said.
An additional protest is planned for noon at U.N. Plaza and Market and Hyde streets in San Francisco, by the Group Code Pink. An action by the A15Action group is also planned at 5:30 p.m. at the Tesla factory in Fremont.

The protesters should have been pushed off the bridge into the bay, I know this is over the top thinking, but had the protesters been protesting the right to life, they would have been most likely beat with Billy clubs, thrown in jail, and not charged for three years as they rot in jail. Unfortunately, there is no truth in justice today, Democrats attack every one of their political enemies. Unfortunately, supporting Hamas,& supporting terrorists, are not Newsom’s or Biden‘s political enemies.
Not So Common - fortunately, or unfortunately, the $220 million suicide net on the GG Bridge may save them. Of course, we could see if engineering calculations for weight limits are adequate. Meanwhile, for anyone with dashcam footage, back up the video files in case authorities need help in the near or far future. Birds of a feather...
