Caltrain will suspend some service between the San Jose Diridon and Tamien stations this weekend for construction on an electrification project.
On Saturday, southbound train 284 will depart San Francisco at 12:05 a.m. and will stop service at San Jose Diridon at 1:44 a.m.
Free buses from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will be available as a replacement mode of transportation.
Northbound train 221 will resume service from the San Jose Diridon station Sunday at 7:19 a.m., and arrive at the San Francisco station at 8:56 a.m.
The Caltrain Electrification Project involves replacing all the diesel trains running between San Francisco and San Jose with electrified trains. The project is scheduled to be completed next fall.
The new trains will produce 250,000 tons fewer carbon dioxide emissions than the diesel trains. The electrification project will increase train frequency by as much as double on weekends, with trains running every half hour, according to Caltrain.
“While there is still a lot of work ahead of us, the vision of greener, quieter and more efficient trains will soon be a reality,” Caltrain board chair Jeff Gee said in a statement last week, when next fall’s schedule was released.
The new schedule will have four trains running in each direction between San Jose and San Francisco during weekday peak hours, with an express train making the trip in less than an hour. The trains will also improve local air quality, be quieter and be outfitted with amenities like onboard Wi-Fi.
