RODEO: The author failed to mention the most egregious rodeo event of all, one found at ALL rodeos: CALF ROPING (recently re-named "tie down roping" by the PRCA, in a disingenous attempt to deflect public criticism of this brutal event. The calves are mere BABIES, often unweaned, or weaned too early. REAL cowboys never practiced calf roping as a timed event, and painful--sometimes fatal--"jerkdowns" are routine. For nearly all rodeo animals--horses and bulls included--the rodeo arena is merely a detour en route to the slaughterhouse. Rodeo is a macho exercise in DOMINATION, and belongs in the dustbin of history.
Consider this statement from current PRCA CEO Keith Martiin, when questioned about this event:
"Do I think it hurts the calf? Sure I do. I'm not stupid." Perhaps not "stupid," but certainly dismissive of animal pain and suffering. (--from the Feb. 6, 2000 SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS)
Calf roping should be outlawed nationwide, and legislation should be introduced every year in every state. Until that happy day, BOYCOTT ALL RODEOS AND THEIR CORPORATE SPONSORS. Follow the money.

We need to evolve as a society past these cruel and barbaric events. Rodeos need to go the way of animal circus acts - in the annals of history, and not continue into the future.
