The San Mateo County Fair is the Peninsula’s festival. The fair comes earlier this year, opening Saturday with Paramount Laser Spectacular’s Tribute to Michael Jackson, a multi-media experience spanning his 40-year career. The 7:30 p.m. show takes the audience on a visual journey highlighted with a live performance featured in a ghost-like atmosphere, lasers and special effects. Through the use of animated laser graphics, laser beams and aerials, the lights and lasers re-create images of Jackson with 3-D holographic effects.
The concert is included in fair admission, but seating is not guaranteed. Think about leaving your car at home. The Fair is located at 2495 S. Delaware St. in San Mateo, two blocks from El Camino Real at the end of 25th Avenue. The bus lines on the El Camino are 250, 251, 262, 292, 294 295, 390 and 391. For more information visit www.samtrans.org. Also, bike maps to the fair are available at www.sanmateocountyfair.com/fair-info/getting-here.

The official name, Dia de Camões, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of Camões, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities), marks the date of LuÃs Vaz de Camões’ death on June 10, 1580 and is Portugal’s National Day. Camões wrote the Lusiadas, Portugal’s national epic celebrating Portuguese history and achievements.
Although it is only officially celebrated in Portugal, Portuguese emigrants and descendents throughout the world celebrate the holiday. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the annual festival sponsored by the Portuguese Heritage Society of California. This celebration shares the food and culture of Portugal as well as other Luso-phone countries, such as Macau and Brazil.
