In 'The Mastermind' and more, Josh O'Connor is stealing the show
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh O'Connor stars in four films this fall, including the New England romance “The History of Sound,” with Paul Mescal; “Rebuilding,” in which he plays a Colorado rancher whose home is taken by wildfires; Rian Johnson’s whodunit “Wake Up Deadman: A Knives Out Mystery”; and Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind,” a 1970-set heist movie. It’s a convergence of movies that cover a wide range of terrain, showcasing O’Connor’s rangy talent and innate, scruffy soulfulness. If “La Chimera” or “Challengers” didn’t already convince you, this season should be a veritable onslaught of O’Connor’s loose leading-man magnetism.

During troubled times in news industry, 168-year-old Atlantic thrives with newspaper-magazine hybrid
NEW YORK (AP) — Jeffrey Goldberg has bold goals: “We want The Atlantic to be the greatest writer's collective on the planet,” the magazine's editor-in-chief said. During troubled times for the news industry, a publication that started in 1857 is a success story. It is growing in staff and circulation — particularly since Goldberg's startling story earlier this year of finding himself inadvertently added to a group chat of the nation's leaders texting about a military strike. The Atlantic is also experimenting with an online newspaper-magazine hybrid, trying to bring magazine-style writing and depth to major stories. Another Goldberg goal: “We're trying to be part of the conversation every single day of the year.”
Former WWE boss Vince McMahon allowed to enter pretrial program in reckless driving case
STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon has been allowed to enter a pretrial program to resolve a reckless driving charge stemming from a crash this summer in Connecticut. A state Superior Court judge ruled Thursday that McMahon could enter the program if he made a $1,000 charitable contribution and only drove if properly licensed and insured. If he does that, the reckless driving charge and another charge of following too closely will be dismissed in one year. McMahon was accused of causing a July 24 crash on the Merritt Parkway in Westport that wrecked his Bentley and damaged two other cars.

Movie Review: Aziz Ansari’s guardian angel, gig economy comedy ‘Good Fortune’ stays earthbound
Aziz Ansari plays a down on his luck gig worker who switches places with a rich guy in “Good Fortune,” which he also wrote and directed. The rich guy is played by Seth Rogen and the architect of the plan is an inept guardian angel played by Keanu Reeves. In her review for The Associated Press, Film Writer Lindsey Bahr writes that while its heart is in the right place, “Good Fortune” is neither entertaining nor moving. Nothing is ever quite laugh out loud funny, which is shocking considering the people involved, and its messages are essentially toothless. Rated R, “Good Fortune” is in theaters Friday.

It features Scorsese collaborators like editor Thelma Schoonmaker, Paul Schrader, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. It also includes Scorsese’s children, his ex-wives and his old Little Italy pals.
A team of artisans brings Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ to life
NEW YORK (AP) — In “Frankenstein,” metaphors are hard to resist. Moviemaking, itself, is a Frankenstein art. Each element of production — the costumes, the set design, the lighting, the music — is brought together like appendages stitched into one body. Guillermo del Toro’s new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, in particular, is a feast of filmmaking arts. Del Toro called on many of his most regular collaborators to turn his long-held vision of “Frankenstein” into a living, breathing reality. Netflix releases “Frankenstein” in theaters Friday, and on its streaming platform Nov. 7.
A character wouldn't leave Reese Witherspoon alone. It led to her first novel
NEW YORK (AP) — Reese Witherspoon has co-authored her first adult novel, “Gone Before Goodbye,” with Harlan Coben. The story revolves around Maggie McCabe, an Army combat surgeon who takes on a suspicious plastic surgery job. This leads her into a world of murder and mystery. Witherspoon and Coben discussed their collaboration this week in Manhattan. Witherspoon, known for her acting and producing, has long admired Coben's work. They met years ago and decided to collaborate on this project. Both authors emphasize that the book is meant to be enjoyed as a novel, with no immediate plans for a film adaptation.
