Brewers erecting a statue of Selig The Brewers are erecting a statue of baseball commissioner Bud Selig outside Miller Park and will unveil it on Aug. 24. Selig headed a group that bought the Seattle Pilots in bankruptcy court in 1970, moved the franchise to Milwaukee and renamed it the Brewers. He became acting commissioner in 1992 and took the job full-time six years later, turning control of the team over to his daughter, Wendy Selig-Prieb. The Selig family sold the team to a group headed by Mark Attanasio in 2005. Selig's foundation donated statues of Hank Aaron and Robin Yount that were unveiled when Miller Park opened in 2001. Selig's statue, which will be more than 7 feet tall, will be built by the same designer, Brian Maughan. Raiders hire Pendergast as assistant The Oakland Raiders have hired longtime NFL defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast as an assistant. The team did not say what Pendergast's role would be when announcing his hiring Monday. Pendergast was let go last month as defensive coordinator in Kansas City. Pendergast had spent the previous five years as defensive coordinator in Arizona, helping the Cardinals make it to the Super Bowl a year ago. He had previously worked as an assistant with the Houston Oilers, Dallas and Cleveland. Pendergast is the third assistant hired by the Raiders since the end of the season, joining offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and defensive line coach Mike Waufle. The team still has not announced whether Tom Cable will return as head coach. Browns release WR Stallworth The Browns have released wide receiver Donte' Stallworth. Stallworth was suspended for the 2009 season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after he pleaded guilty to killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida. He spent 24 days in jail. Stallworth played one season for the Browns, catching 17 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown in 2008. Goodell said Friday that Stallworth would be reinstated after the Super Bowl. Colts are 7-1 favorites to win in 2011 One bad pass by Peyton Manning hasn't cost the Indianapolis Colts any cachet. Indianapolis is a 7-1 favorite to take home the NFL championship, followed by the Chargers (8-1), Saints (9-1) and the Patriots (10-1). The Colts were 5-point favorites in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but Drew Brees and the Saints rallied for a 31-17 victory. New Orleans sealed the upset when Tracy Porter intercepted Manning's pass and returned it for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Indianapolis is 3-1 to get back to the Super Bowl, while New Orleans is 5-1.
