Iziah Singleton enjoyed a career day to lead the Serra Padres (2-0 WCAL, 2-3 overall) to their second straight win Saturday to open West Catholic Athletic League play, throttling to a 45-10 victory over St. Ignatius-SF (0-2, 1-4) at Freitas Field.
Singleton needed just 12 carries to rush for a career-high 120 yards and two touchdowns, The senior running back’s previous career best came in the season opener, a 56-42 loss to Folsom, when he ran 25 times for 117 yards, the only other game he’s touched triple digits in his varsity career.
Junior running back Andrew Takapautolo added six carries for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Caleb Bandel was 2-of-3 passing for 34 yards, including a 29-yard scoring pass to junior Charlie Walsh. Freshman quarterback William Orr was 4-of-8 passing for 29 yards.
The Padres were fueled by a strong showing from defense and special teams. Junior cornerback Cornell James turned his second career interception into a pick-6 with a 59-yard return, junior Malakai Taufoou blocked a punt, and senior kicker Saul Marks booted a 52-yard field goal in the first quarter — 1 yard shy of his school record for 53 yards, and just the fourth field goal in program history of 50 yards or more.
