Menlo-Atherton 4, Woodside 1
The Bears had gotten off to poor start to the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division campaign. Despite picking up their first points of the PAL season with a 2-0 win over Hillsdale and a 2-2 draw with Carlmont, the Bears still found themselves in last place in the standings as they hosted the Wildcats, who entered the game atop the Bay Division table.
But M-A (2-3-1 PAL Bay, 6-4-3 overall) is surging. Tied 1-all at halftime, the Bears struck three times in the second to stun Woodside (3-2-1, 6-4-2). Mae Kunihiro, fresh off being named the Bay Division’s flag football MVP honor, scored a pair of unassisted goals for the Bears. Alex Alvarado and Ella Mohr rounded out the scoring, with Sam Ruiz picking up an assist.
Ellie Sala scored for the Wildcats, off a pass from Emma Downing.
Carlmont 2, Sequoia 1
The Ravens moved into first place in the Bay Division by a point over Woodside with the win over the Ravens.
Carlmont (3-1-2 PAL Bay, 6-3-3 overall) scored both its goals in the first half to lead 2-0 at halftime. Delaney Kumer and Rina Choe supplied the goals, with Niyati Hazari and Nicole Franklin earning assists.
Maddie Bryant cut the deficit in half for Sequoia (2-2-2, 4-6-3) in the second half, off an assist from Kayla Halada.
Terra Nova 3, San Mateo 0
The Tigers maintained a share of the early Ocean Division lead with the shutout of the Bearcats.
Both Terra Nova (2-0 PAL Ocean, 6-4 overall) and South City are off to 2-0 starts in division play.
Ella Templin played distributor for the Tigers, assisting on McKenna Shih’s game-opening goal and had the helper on Niva Alexiev’s game-finishing strike.
Between those goals, Aleah McArthur converted a Geneva Chan pass for the Tigers’ second goal.
San Mateo falls to 1-1 in PAL Ocean play.
Oceana 3, Capuchino 0
After the Mustangs picked up their first win of the season in a win over Westmoor, it was the Sharks turn to do it this week, shutting out Capuchino for their first victory of the year.
Shalien Ekah scored two unassisted goals for Oceana (1-1 PAL Ocean), with Micah McNally rounding out the scoring off an assist from Jordan Hsieh.
Capuchino falls to 1-1 in Ocean play and 1-10-1 overall.
El Camino 11, Westmoor 0
The Colts sliced right through the Rams on their way to the Ocean Division win.
Freshman Isabella Fernandez had a huge game for El Camino (1-1 PAL Ocean, 3-7 overall), scoring four goals. Kiya Mas also scored a brace, while Eli Chavez, Lara Rezende, Natalia Hernandez and Sajin Satuito all scored once.
Menlo School 1, Sacred Heart Prep 0
A dash of brilliance lifted the Knights past the rival Gators in a key West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division matchup.
Scoreless into the final 20 minutes of the game, senior Krista Arreola made a 50-yard run from just past the midfield stripe, beating one defender and juking the goalkeeper to give Menlo (3-1 WBAL Foothill, 4-2-4 overall) the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute.
Menlo goalie Biance Putanec made the goal stand, posting her second consecutive clean sheet.
Sacred Heart Prep falls to 2-1 in WBAL play and 5-3-1 overall.
In other action...
Aragon (2-2-2 PAL Bay, 3-5-3 overall) and rival Hillsdale (1-2-3, 3-5-3) played to a scoreless draw.
South City (2-0 PAL Ocean) stayed unbeaten in PAL Ocean play with a 1-0 decision over Mills (1-1).

In a nip-and-tuck battle between rivals, overtime was needed before the Gators emerged with the victory.
Tied at 46-all after regulation, SHP (2-1 WBAL, 8-7 overall) outscored Menlo (1-2, 9-7) 13-7 in the extra period.
Alex Osterloh filled the stat sheet in leading the Gators. The senior guard scored a game-high 13 points, while grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out seven assists and coming up with a steal. Younger brother, sophomore post Matt Osterloh, helped the cause with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Crystal 56, Pinewood 45
The Gryphons outscored the Panthers 32-15 in the second and third quarters as they rallied from a first-quarter deficit to win.
Crystal improves to 2-1 in WBAL play and 12-3 overall, while Pinewood falls to 1-2 and 12-4.
Summit Shasta 52, More-SJ 36
The Black Bears held the Knights to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters as they cruised to the Private School Athletic League victory.
Summit Shasta (5-0 PSAL, 10-6 overall) limited More (3-2, 9-6) to 3 points in the first quarter and 9 in the second to lead 20-12 at halftime. The Knights got back in the game in the third, outscoring the Black Bears 15-11.
But Summit Shasta finished with a flurry, outscoring More 21-9 in the fourth.
Bellarmine 65, Serra 57
The Bells handed the Padres their fourth WCAL loss in five games.
Serra (1-4 WCAL, 9-6 overall) led 13-9 after the first quarter and 29-24 at halftime. Bellarmine (3-2, 11-4) took the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Padres 19-12 to take a two-point lead going into the fourth and then extended it over the final eight minutes.
In other action...
Design Tech (6-0 PSAL, 6-6 overall) won its sixth straight game, beating San Francisco Christian (0-3, 0-4), 69-38.
Mountain View Academy (5-1 PSAL, 5-2 overall) got past Pacific Bay Christian (2-2, 4-6), 59-51.
Girls’ basketball
Sacred Heart Prep 68, Crystal 26
The Gators scored 26 points in the first quarter and never looked back as they cruised to the win over the Gryphons.
The game stabilized in the second and third quarters, with SHP (3-0 WBAL Skyline, 5-7 overall) outscoring Crystal (1-2, 7-4) 33-22. The Gators then shut out the Gryphons in the fourth quarter.
Senior Kate Baron led the way for SHP, scoring a game-high 26 points, knocking down four 3-pointers along the way. Bella Jansen-Olliges, a freshman, added 21 points, while junior Maggie Goldstein chipped in 10 points.
Crystal was led by Casey Louie, who scored 12 points.
Notre Dame-Belmont 54, Harker 44
The Tigers held the Eagles to just 15 second-half points in picking up the WBAL Foothill Division victory.
Anani Perez and Sammy Kakala each broke the 20-point barrier for NDB (2-1 WBAL Foothill, 13-1 overall). Perez scored a game-high 23 points, while Kakala finished with 22.
Harker falls to 0-3 in WBAL play and 8-7 overall.
Nueva School 46, BISV 39
The Mavericks had three players score in double figures to lead the way past the Bobcats.
Julia Randolph scored a team-high 15 points for Nueva (4-1 PSAL, 7-6 overall), but Anjali Marathasan was right on her heels with 14 and Willa Beard one point back of that, finishing with 13.
BISV falls to 2-2 in PSAL play and 4-10 overall.
In other action...
Castilleja (2-1 WBAL Skyline, 7-6 overall) dropped Mercy (0-3, 6-8), 30-15.
In a PSAL showdown, San Francisco Christian (3-0 PSAL, 5-1 overall) slipped past Design Tech (4-1, 6-4), 38-37.
