Currently No. 7 in the Central Coast Section softball rankings, the Mills Vikings (11-3-1) haven’t had to recuperate from too many losses this season. One of Mills’ three losses came to rival Capuchino last Friday, but the Lady Vikings proved they can bounce back just fine.
“I think we’re really good at leaving it at the game,” Mills head coach Michelle Beauchemin said. “Obviously, when we have something incredible happen, we talk about it.”
Starting pitcher Hailey Pedroza made something incredible happen, for sure. In returning to the diamond, Mills rode a five-inning no-hitter from the junior right-hander to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory Tuesday at home over Gunn-Palo Alto (6-8).
“She was on fire,” Beauchemin said. “She was in her zone. She a hundred percent just threw for herself, and put her faith in her defense if it didn’t go her way.”
It was a rare start for Pedroza, a three-year varsity player who has served predominantly as the Vikings’ closer since last season. The no-no marks her first win of the year, and her first complete game since the opening month of her freshman year. Pedroza has had Gunn’s number throughout her career, though. When the two teams met last season in Palo Alto, the Titans rallied for a 2-1 victory. Pedroza worked four no-hit innings in that game to take a no-decision.

With junior catcher Audrey Jang calling her own pitches Tuesday, Pedroza locked in to allow just one baserunner on a third-inning walk. Pedroza went on to face the minimum 15 batters, however, when, two pitches later, Jang threw the runner out trying to steal. Pedroza finished with five strikeouts.
“I really think the pitching and catching dynamic today was really on point,” Beauchemin said.
Mills totaled 14 hits, with sophomore Jazzy Maske going 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs. Maske produced the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, driving home sophomore Alyssa Penas from third on a grounder up the middle to secure the walk-off, mercy-rule victory.
Penas added two hits with a triple and an RBI, sophomore Lucy Esquivel had two hits with a double and two RBIs, and Jang tabbed two singles with an RBI.
Pedroza has made just five pitching appearances this season, with just 7 2/3 innings of work to her credit entering play Tuesday. The win was her first since May 9, 2024. As a freshman, Pedroza lost the first three decisions of her varsity career before finishing the season 1-3. She went 5-0 last season, and has now won seven straight decisions dating back to 2023.
