Mattheo LaCasia topped the field with a personal record in the 400 meters and Evan Usher claimed first place in the discus to lead the Woodside boys’ track team to an impressive fourth-place finish at the CCS Top 8 Invite, held Saturday at Los Gatos High School.
LaCasia flew through the boys’ 400 in 47.22 seconds, the best time in the Central Coast Section this season — by over a full second. St. Francis junior Sean Walsh owns the section’s second best time in 48.25. LaCasia also placed third in the 200 in 21.65; behind Piedmont Hills senior Jonas Petty, first place in 21.50; and Hillsdale senior Sineth Andrabadu, second place in at PR time of 21.51.
Usher ruled the discus pit with a top throw of 164 feet even. Aptos senior Logan Brantley took second at 157-09. It was quite a week for Usher, who earlier in the week during a PAL tri-meet at Burlingame, fired a first-place throw of 172-1, the top distance in CCS this season. Brantley ranks second in the section with a 169-6 at the Arcadia Invitational.
Fourth-place Woodside finished with 35 points. Bellarmine (74) claimed first; Los Gatos (46) second; and St. Ignatius (45 1/2) third. In the girls’ meet, Menlo-Atherton finished ninth as San Mateo County’s top placer with 29 points. Mitty (54) and St. Ignatius (54) tied atop the girls’ standings, with Los Gatos (52) close behind in third.
