Andrew Takapautolo, Serra football. There were several rave performances on defense in the Padres’ 34-14 win Saturday against Sacred Heart Cathedral at George Rush Stadium, but Takapautolo ran away with the Honor Roll nod on offense. The junior running back totaled 17 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns to help Serra improve to 3-0 in WCAL play. On defense, freshman Taupaki Latu totaled three sacks, junior Lemani Fehoko had two sacks and one interception, and junior Malakai Taufoou nabbed two interceptions.
Maya Pande, San Mateo girls’ golf. The Bearcats No. 5, and final scoring golfer, came up aces as her score was the winning one in San Mateo’s 255-256 win over Menlo-Atherton. The Bearcats trailed by a stroke after the first four pairs finished, but Pande’s round of 58 at Poplar Creek Golf Course was two shots better than her M-A counterpart to give the Bearcats the team win.
Ysabelle Galvez, Summit Shasta volleyball. The Black Bears recorded their 50th straight win in PSAL play with a sweep of Pacific Bay Christian — the same team the streak started against in 2019 — and Galvez was driving the ship. The senior setter was credited with 29 assists to go with 11 digs, while teaming with senior outside hitter Bianca Flores for 15 kills, senior Vanessa Xu for nine kills, and junior Daniela Ruiz for eight.
Dylan Sorensen, Carlmont football. The junior receiver/defensive back made his impact felt on both sides of the ball as the Scots snapped a four-game losing streak with a 31-19 win over Capuchino. He gave the Scots a quick lead when he stepped in front of a pass on a fake punt and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. On offense, he finished with five catches for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns of 17 and 18 yards, on beautifully lofted passes from quarterback Brody Zirelli.
Lauren Greene, Carlmont flag football. A senior quarterback, Greene helped lead the Scots to their biggest win of the season to date. Taking on a Menlo team that is one of the best in Northern California, Greene helped lead her team to a second-half rally in a 12-6 win. Trailing 6-0 at halftime, Greene tied the score on a run in the third quarter. In the fourth, she hooked up with Sam Tow for the game-winning score to snap the Knights’ 41-game winning streak.
Bryce Winters, Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo. The senior attacker came up big in a pair of Bay Division showdowns. In the Bears’ 10-9, triple-overtime win over Woodside, Winters had an assist and two goals in the second half — including the game-winner from the left point in the sudden-victory third overtime period. In M-A’s 14-9 win over Hillsdale, Winters notched five points on four assists and a goal.
Ryland Caelius, Menlo-Atherton flag football. The senior defender was part of a Bears defense that shined in a 14-0 win over Burlingame to stay tied atop the Bay Division standings. Caelius had three of M-A’s five interceptions as the Bears held the Panthers to 70 yards of offense. It was M-A’s third shutout in four games and sixth time this year.
Grant Bennitt, Cason Mitchell and Aidan Sharp, Menlo-Atherton boys’ cross country. The Bears ran away with the boys’ varsity championship at the PAL #2 meet at Crystal Springs, as five M-A runners finished in the top 10, including a sweep of the top four spots. Bennitt, Mitchell and Sharp, though, charted a striking photo finish as all three recorded identical times down to the hundredth of a second at 15:53, with the Sacred Heart Prep transfer Bennitt claiming the individual championship.
Jamie Elkington, Sequoia flag football. The senior receiver/defensive back accounted for four touchdowns in the Ravens’ 36-6 win over Capuchino. On offense, she had five catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, she had interception returns of 40 and 50 yards for two more scores.
Saoirse Price, El Camino girls’ golf. While the PAL Ocean Division often plays on abbreviated courses, Price’s showing on a seven-hole round at Green Hills Country Club was still a notch above. The senior shot a 28 on the short course to claim medalist honors in El Camino’s 179-210 win over Capuchino. The next best score on the day was EC freshman Amaya Negrette with a 35, while EC senior Juliana Bazlamit tied Cap’s top scorer, sophomore Karen Rogers, with a 36.
JJ Lange, Woodside football. The sophomore do-anything scored a pair of touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 31-0 win over Hillsdale to improve to 6-0 on the season. Lange carried the ball four times for 29 yards, scoring from 19 yards out. He also caught one pass from quarterback Charlie Dalrymple, which went for a 15-yard touchdown.
Mina Lee Hwong Bartlett, Design Tech volleyball. The junior outside hitter has really locked in her swing in recent weeks, but last Tuesday’s four-set win over More-San Jose was on another level. Hwong Bartlett is riding a streak of double-digit kills in seven straight matches, while going for a season-high 24 kills in her most recent outing. She swung at a .388 clip, while adding eight digs and four service aces, with the win keeping Design Tech in the upper half of the nine-team Private School Athletic League standings, along with Summit Shasta, Basis Independent and Nueva School.
Palmer Riley, Menlo football. The senior edge rusher did a lot of everything in the Knights’ 37-7 dismantling of crosstown Menlo-Atherton. Riley amassed six tackles, two for loss, added two sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection. He also showed up on offense, totaling 48 yards on the first two receptions of his varsity career.
